Mike & Pam Wanzer, Certified Grief Recovery Specialists - Life’s Most Predictable Experience - Loss

(1 PHD Approved)

Objectives:

  • We, as a society, are ill equipped to deal with one of life’s absolutely most predictable experiences: Loss. Loss and grief are the two most off limit topics of conversation in American today.

  • From an early age we are taught to acquire things—approval, love, possessions, achievements—but not what to do when we lose these things.

  • There are more than 40 loss events you may experience during a lifetime. Most adults experience an average of 15.

  • The Definition of Grief as defined in the Grief Recovery Handbook: Grief, or loss, is the change or end of a routine or familiar pattern of behavior. The span this encompasses is huge.

  • Grief is an Emotion – It cannot be intellectualized or reasoned away.

  • Every loss, every set of circumstances and every relationship is unique.

  • Grief is the result of a broken heart which requires learning to think with your heart, not your head which is your intellect.

  • Society imposes myths, misinformation and incorrect information which results in people trying to categorize the loss—such as time frames and stages.

  • In order to move through recovery, you must learn to identify this incorrect information and replace it with true and correct information.

  • Many people believe recovery is forgetting. However, recovery is not about forgetting someone who was very special in your life.
